Join us for our 2024 Media Literacy Event for Educators

Event Overview:
With students accessing social media earlier than ever and misinformation becoming harder to detect, it’s crucial to prepare the next generation to think critically online.
The Toronto Star invites you to a one-day media literacy forum designed to equip educators with practical tools to teach media literacy with confidence. Join fellow educators for this impactful event and help empower young minds to discern fact from fiction.

Author and Journalist, Joyce Grant will talk about the importance of journalism in today’s increasingly divisive world. And she will introduce you to her multi-pronged approach to helping young people spot misinformation, find good sources and understand the importance of journalism today.
Educator, and co-founder of Teaching Kids News, Jonathan Tilly will discuss the need for teaching and learning media literacy in the classrooms of today. The conversation will begin with an exploration of how media literacy education has changed and evolved in the last twenty years and then offer insights to where it may be going. With this context in place, the conversation will shift to the challenges that are confronted when teaching media literacy, different approaches and strategies to overcome these obstacles, and the steps required to achieve the final aim: for all students to become a savvy and thoughtful consumer of all media.
Editor-in-chief of the Toronto Star, Nicole MacIntyre will participate in an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session with attendees.
The day will end with a tour of the Toronto Star newsroom.
This event is for Educators. Please use your school board, or private school email address when purchasing your ticket. This media literacy event is suitable for elementary and middle school teachers. High school educators are welcome to attend.
