This student activity package is designed to encourage students to engage with, reflect on, and think critically about the media they encounter on a daily basis. Through engaging and hands-on activities, students will learn to deconstruct media and understand the role that media has in shaping their perceptions of the world. In so doing, they will demonstrate 21st century literacy.

Below are the Media Literacy Overall Expectations for Grades 5 – 8. These Overall Expectations are incorporated into the activities outlined in the student activity resource.
1. Demonstrate an understanding of a variety of media texts;
2. Identify some media forms and explain how the conventions and techniques associated with them are used to create meaning;
3. Create a variety of media texts for different purposes and audiences, using appropriate forms, conventions, and techniques;
4. Reflect on and identify their strengths as media interpreters and creators, areas for improvement, and the strategies they found most helpful in understanding and creating media texts.
About the writers:
Kathleen Tilly previously worked in adult and child education both in the private and public sectors. Most recently, Kathleen worked as a corporate trainer and instructor for Janssen Ortho (a company of Johnson & Johnson), developing and presenting curriculum and training materials for sales representatives. Previously she an Instructional Leader of literacy in the Toronto District School Board, where she worked with teachers to develop their literacy programs. She also spent 6 years as an elementary teacher with the Toronto District School Board and at Havergal College. She has a B.A. in Art History from Dalhousie University, teaching qualifications from the University of Edinburgh and a M.Ed from OISE, U of T. Jonathan Tilly is an elementary school teacher with The Toronto District School Board. He has taught Grades 1 – 8, including special education. Jonathan has been a speaker at conferences in Canada and the United States on the subjects of child development and psychology. He has a B.A. in Philosophy from The University of King’s College and an M.A. in Child Study from The Institute of Child Study (OISE).
